About Alexandra Newton Abbot

Contact & About

Starting life in 1871 as the Corn Exchange, the Alexandra in Newton Abbot has experienced a number of facelifts over the years, first being used as a skating rink before being converted into a theatre around 1900. Once a new balcony was added, the building became a permanent movie theatre in 1927. Charles Scott took over the enterprise in 1960 and, in 1996, the balcony area was transformed into a second auditorium. In keeping with its history, the Alexandra is set for another overhaul. A proposed redevelopment of Newton Abbot’s town centre could see to the building being turned into a restaurant and events venue, with a new multiplex in the adjacent unit. Watch this space.
