About Barn Cinema, Dartington Art Centre

Contact & About

Set in a barn converted to a theatre under Bauhaus School co-founder Walter Gropius’s watch in the 1930s, this vintage 170-seater plays host to indie, mainstream and global flicks, while also offering workshops, a film club, a podcast and Q&As. Guests have included award-winning indie directors such as Mark Jenkin (Bait), while outdoor and indoor screenings in the nearby gardens and Great Hall range from National Theatre productions to silent films scored by a live pianist. A spirit of inclusion underpins the Barn’s activities, with screenings tailored to audience needs and local visitors invited to participate in the Community Programmers Group. Available for hire, the barn also owns a film archive, thanks to future-thinking founders Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst.
