About David Lean Cinema Croydon
Contact & About
Taking its name from influential British filmmaker David Lean – the director of such epics as The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago – this small but much-loved arts cinema first opened its doors in 1995, nestled within the Croydon Clocktower complex. In 2011, major arts-related cuts by the local council forced it to close, but the passionate Save the David Lean Cinema campaign – mounted by the venue’s loyal patrons – proved successful, and the cinema reopened in 2014. Now mostly staffed by volunteers, it’s still going strong, offering a varied line-up of documentaries and arthouse features from around the world.
