The Kinema is saturated in nostalgia, from the foyer’s mini-museum of the Golden Age of Cinema, through the ice cream intervals to a weekly Compton Kinestra organ recital after Saturday’s last screening. But this isn’t just a nostalgia trip. Kooky decor aside, the 169-, 92- and 74-seat auditoriums are fully accessible and air-conditioned, running an impressive schedule of the latest family hits as well as live theatre, ballet, opera and gig screenings. The family has earned a BKSTS CTC Projection Team of the Year award, diligently operating the only fully functional UK cinema to employ back projection. Senior, autism-friendly and outdoor screenings augment the generous offer, with ticket prices all well under a tenner.
