7 TV shows arriving in August that we’re excited about

The themes for August are prequels, revenge, and powerful women. Here’s a look at the new shows on streaming that Jenna Guillaume is getting most excited about in the coming month of quality TV…

The Sandman

Attempts have been made to adapt The Sandman, Neil Gaiman’s popular fantasy comic series, for the screen since at least the 90s. Now a series is finally here, and it looks like it will deliver the dark, twisty goods for both comic and new fans alike.

Developed for TV by Gaiman alongside David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg, The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, the king of dreams who makes his escape after being held captive for 106 years. Joining him is an extensive and impressive cast that includes Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Jenna Coleman, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, and Stephen Fry.

A League of Their Own

A League of Their Own is an incredible movie and is now set to be an incredible TV series, too. Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson are the creators of this adaptation, which brings new characters and storylines to the concept of a women’s baseball league during World War II. The show promises to be more inclusive, with women of colour and queer characters highlighted in the trailer. Abbi Jacobson stars in the show alongside Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Kelly McCormack, Nick Offerman, and Patrick J. Adams.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand its not-so-cinematic branch with a new genre: a legal dramedy, starring the talented Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner who also gains Hulk abilities after receiving a blood transfusion from Bruce. Jennifer is a lawyer who specialises in cases involving superhumans, leading her to take on Bruce’s old nemesis Emile Blonsky as a client (Tim Roth returns to the role). Mark Ruffalo also returns as Bruce, with Benedict Wong back as Wong. Plus, Jameela Jamil joins the cast as Titania, a rival of Jennifer/She-Hulk. It’s a must-watch for any MCU fans.

The Girl in the Mirror

A change of pace from all the franchises, this spooky Spanish thriller series is about a girl called Alma, who is the sole survivor of a bus crash from which she wakes up in hospital with amnesia, night terrors and mysterious visions. It’s atmospheric and addictive, as you watch Alma try to piece together her identity, her life, and what really happened in the crash.

Kleo

If there’s a female assassin-shaped hole in your life post-Killing Eve, then this German series might just hit the spot. Set after the fall of the Berlin wall, Kleo follows a former East German spy searching for answers about who betrayed hernot to mention revenge. The trailer promises a quirky, action-packed, and very fun ride.

House of the Dragon

It’s ba—aaaack. Well, kind of. The biggest show of all time—with perhaps the most instant downfall of all time—Game of Thrones is getting a new spin-off with this prequel series. Whether it can capture even a portion of the audience of the original, only time will tell.

It’ll certainly appeal to those who were attracted to the world for its dragons, with the show set at a time when the mythical creatures are alive and everywhere, as House Targaryen rules the Seven Kingdoms whilst being on the brink of civil war . Beloved Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik is showrunner alongside Ryan J Condal, and the show stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, and Olivia Cooke.

Andor

Rogue One is probably the most beloved of the one-off Star Wars movies, so it’s not surprising that Disney has decided to expand upon it in this prequel TV series (despite the ending we all know is coming). Set in the five years before the events of the movie and exploring the formation of the Rebel Alliance, Andor brings back the compelling Diego Luna to reprise his role as Cassian Andor, a refugee and thief who becomes a spy and a hero. Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgard, and Forest Whitaker are also in the cast.
