Best new movies and TV series on Amazon Prime Video UK: May 2022

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Amazon Prime Video’s UK library. Eliza Janssen presents her picks for titles worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down.

Top picks

Sports movie marathon (May 1)

If the weather’s too grizzly for you to get outside for a run or a game with mates, stay in and scroll down to see the mighty pile of movies dropping on Prime at the start of May. There’s a notable theme here, too: films about underdogs, motley crews, Cinderella stories swooping up from the bottom of the ladder to win some big trophy…OR friendship, the greatest prize of all (snore).

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story can set you off on the right track by parodying these kind of inspirational rise-to-the-top narratives. But there’s also a pair of baseball classics, giving you the chance to hear Kevin Costner’s creed that “if you build it, they will come” in Field of Dreams, or to see Madonna and Geena Davis as the Rockford Peaches in A League Of Their Own. Great stuff to cheer on while lying like a corpse on the couch.

The Wilds: Season 2 (May 6)

The first season of this female-driven survival drama was shot in New Zealand: production moved to the sunny coast of Queensland, Australia for season two. Unfortunately for the young ladies who were attempting to embrace their womanhood at the Dawn of Eve retreat, they’ll still be stuck on that foreboding island, watched on all sides by the shadowy conductor (Rachel Griffiths) of a social experiment.

Similiar series Yellowjackets has probably overtaken The Wilds when it comes to girls behaving badly in a Lord of the Flies situation, but this Prime original series maintains a passionate fanbase, and it perfectly upped the ante by introducing a parallel island of boys in the season one cliffhanger. Can the Dawn of Eve and Twilight of Adam camps team up to screw over their captors?

Night Sky: Season 1 (May 20)

Last month Josh Brolin spent a lot of time on Prime Video staring into a mysterious void in the ground, for the sci-fi Western series Outer Range. Amazon seems to be simply flipping that dynamic horizontally for this show, in which married couple J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek harbour a portal to a deserted alien world above right in their backyard.

The York family is good at keeping “the Chamber” a secret, until an enigmatic newcomer (Chai Hansen) arrives and unlocks the true potential of its supernatural architecture. Night Sky should be worth a watch for its simple yet hypnotic premise, and for the immense likability of those two leads. But can Sissy be trusted? She literally has the word “space” in her last name…
