The Magic Lantern has been in Tywyn since 1893. First built as the town assembly rooms, it was used for such noble pursuits as badminton practice and variety performances. Films are said to have started as early as 1900, with recently uncovered adverts for footage from the Boer War. This places the Magic Lantern right at the start of cinema in the UK. Today, though, the Magic Lantern features a Sony 4K (3D) digital projection system and Dolby 7.1 surround sound. It’s also home to a fully stocked bar and two stages for live events.
