Best new movies and TV series on Amazon Prime Video UK: February 2022

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Amazon Prime Video’s UK library. Eliza Janssen presents her picks for titles worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down.

Top picks

I Want You Back (February 11)

You’ve got a pre-Valentines double date with two of comedy’s most eligible romantic leads: effervescent Obvious Child lead Jenny Slate, and gravelly-voiced It’s Always Sunny freak Charlie Day. They’re both so damn charming, and will probably still delight you while they’re wrongfully trying to wrangle their exes back into a relationship.

As two freshly-dumped single people, they’re putting their heads together to destroy their exes’ (Scott Eastwood and Gina Rodriguez) comically perfect new romances. We’re expecting a wry yet nicely predictable happy ending for our leads, à la Sleeping With Other People.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Season 4 (February 18)

She’s always been well before her time, but Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) finally busts into the 1960s in this latest season of fluffy retro comedy. At times I’ve found her rise to anachronistic stand-up fame a tad rushed, and now she’s practically at the top of the world, commanding huge audiences and donning ever more elaborate hats each episode.

Is there no other direction to go but down? Long-suffering manager Susie (Alex Borstein) probably thinks so, still finding Midge unmanageable as her TV appearances bloom. I hope she can hook up with legend Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby) in the meantime, even if that’d be extremely disrespectful to the real person’s memory: the actors have heaps of chemistry together.

The Protégé (February 25)

Assassins are severely overrepresented in cinema. At least I hope so: surely there aren’t this many badass, leather-wearing, emotionally scarred hit-women covertly slaying their corrupt targets in real life…If the story of a highly-skilled killer lady seeking vengeance feels fresh to you, by all means please enjoy The Protégé.

But even for those of us who’ve already seen too many of these things (from Luc Besson’s obsessive canon to this year’s Kate), star Maggie Q is worth watching. Her supporting cast here includes Sam Jackson and Michael Keaton, and she’s the IRL martial arts protégé of Jackie Chan, which should be all you need to know.
