Top picks

The Boys Presents: Diabolical (March 4)

We’re still waiting until June for season three of Prime Video’s subversive superhero show The Boys, so this animated spin-off should tide fans over. It’s taking the corrupt world of Vought heroes back to its roots in the second dimension: a place where The Boys‘ hyperviolence and horniness originated, after all, in Garth Ennis’ dark comic books.

A stacked comedy voice cast will expand the Vought stable of anti-heroes: Justin Roiland, Awkwafina, Kieran Culkin, Don Cheadle, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Andy Samberg, Simon Pegg, and Christian Slater are all voicing disturbing new characters that may be too messed-up for the live action series.

Lucy and Desi (March 4

One of Hollywood’s most romantic TV love stories—onscreen or off—is being retold on Prime Video twice this year. There’s Aaron Sorkin’s fictionalised Being The Ricardos, starring Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem in Oscar-nominated roles; or there’s this loving documentary, directed by (another small-screen comedy star in her own right) Amy Poehler.

Maybe you grew up watching I Love Lucy, or you’re just curious about the truth behind Being The Ricardossnarky, glamorous, perhaps a tad unrealistic reimagining. Either way, all that archival footage and behind-the-scenes sweetness should be a heart-swelling trip back in time.

Deep Water (March 18)

Originally scheduled for release wayyy back in 2020, Deep Water brings in all of the erotic thriller big guns to try and prove that the genre ain’t dead. Director Adrian Lyne basically defined the erotic thriller with Fatal Attraction and 9½ Weeks, and his first movie in ages is based on a Patricia Highsmith novel about a loveless marriage tested by her sexual voracity and his jealousy.

Sexy stars Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas even went to the trouble of hooking up mid-pandemic just to get some buzz going for the film. Okay that’s a totally unsubstantiated claim, but at the very least their short-term fling gives tabloid readers an extra saucy incentive to tune in.
