Top picks

One True Loves (May 3)

May’s a slow month for Prime Video TBH. Sometimes you’ve just gotta show up to the table and snack on what’s available, and in this case, it’s pure American cheese on a corn cracker. This weepy romantic drama stars Broadway performer Philippa Soo as a woman caught between two wonderful, dashing men: her husband, long thought dead after a tragic accident at sea, and Simu Liu, the new guy who’s recently put a ring on her finger. What a realistic and relatable dilemma to face!! The movie’s received shocking reviews, so I will be earnestly pressing play when I next need to sit back and indulge for 90 minutes or so.

Air (May 12)

The latest collaboration between Hollywood bros Ben Affleck and Matt Damon was only recently in cinemas: but if you didn’t feel like chucking on a pair of sneakers and heading to the theatre, you can now stay inside and watch the movie about sneakers instead. Affleck directs and stars alongside Damon in this retro origin story of Nike’s legendary Air Jordans, an athletic brand venture that capitalised on Michael Jordan’s meteoric rise before practically anybody else did. The film is swift and crowd-pleasing, even when it irritatingly assumes we the audience have no bloody clue who Michael Jordan is.

Malignant (May 27)

Zoe Bell’s quickly-killed-off character summarises Malignant best when she first spots the film’s nasty supernatural villain and succinctly exclaims: “what the f**k?!!” If you haven’t treated yourself to James Wan’s bananas horror film yet, please go in blind and don’t be fooled by its moody, depressing opening act. What lies inside our protagonist’s mind is executed in the most gory, OTT, and outright fun feature imaginable. If you’re a fan of Sam Raimi or campier, more heightened horror in general, this one should shoot to the top of your Halloween party playlist.
