Best new movies and TV series on Disney+ UK: July 2023

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Disney+‘s UK library. Here’s Eliza Janssen’s recommendations for the titles most worth watching. Scroll down for the full list of everything arriving on the platform.

Top picks

The Bear: Season 2 (July 19)

It’s extremely unfair that audiences outside the US can only catch up with this critically acclaimed kitchen drama one month after its original release: international fans wanna look at yummy sandwiches, too! The good news is, uninitiated viewers now have a bit more time to discover young chef Carmy’s incredibly stressful first season as head chef of a humble Chicago restaurant, before seeing how he and his ambitious team take things to the next level in this latest batch of episodes. Get it while it’s hot (or, as per this frustrating release, re-heated in the Disney+ microwave).

The Hate U Give (July 7)

Based on a celebrated YA novel, this 2018 drama follows Amandla Stenberg as a traumatised Black teen who witnesses her best friend’s death at the hands of police brutality. It’s rich, complex stuff for the typically-frothy genre of high-school drama, immediately calling to mind the countless real Americans gunned down by racist forces rather than flimsy love triangles and supernatural powers. The film was a box office success and would make great extra-curricular viewing for politically active young minds, who might grasp a fictional tale of injustice sooner than reading the true history of similar cases.

Drag Me To Dinner (July 26)

If you eat up all things Drag Race like I do, this bizarre hybrid of cooking competition series and a dream drag brunch might hit the spot. Neil Patrick Harris is joined by acerbic roast queen Bianca Del Rio and actress Haneefah Wood in judging duelling teams of drag chefs, who all hope they can rely on some sparkle and a few well-timed dick jokes to disguise their lack of skill at cooking up a winning dinner. The series shows that we have officially hit peak-RuPaul-saturation: even when Ru and her bounty of catchphrases aren’t on the scene, TV producers are still hungry for her brand of glittery drama.
