The film tracks a number of different characters, each being important to the discovery of the comet. Young Leo Biederman (Wood) was the first to sight the comet. Journalist Jenny Lerner (Leoni) discovered the top secret plan to prevent it from hitting Earth. Older astronaut Spurgeon Tanner (Duvall) leads the US-Russian team tasked to save the planet while the President of the United States (Freeman) initiates societal calm and puts counter-measures into place... should all else fail.
