Legendary Oscar-nominated director Sidney Lumet adapts Tennessee Williams' play about alluring but troublemaking drifter Val (Marlon Brando) who, while avoiding arrest in a different town, attempts to hang low and go straight in Mississippi. He lands a job in a dry goods store, owned by the frustrated wife (Anna Magnani) of a dying elderly man (Victor Jory). As she sets her sights on Val, so do other members of the small Mississippi town - attention that he really cannot afford to have.
