The friendly family of feelings we met in 2015’s Inside Out are back—with some new emotions in tow, because puberty’s a tough slog.

How to watch Inside Out 2 in the UK

Inside Out 2 is currently available to rent or buy digitally, and is arriving on Disney+ on September 25.

What is Inside Out 2 about?

Inside Out 2 sees newly minted teenager Riley contending with both high school and the onset of puberty—which, as anyone who’s suffered through it knows all too well, comes freighted with a whole bunch of new emotions. Familiar friends Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are all present and correct, but joining them are Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Should be fun!

The cast of Inside Out 2

We’ve got Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear (replacing Bill Hader from the first film), Liza Lapira as Disgust (replacing Mindy Kaling), and Maya Hawke as Anxiety, the nominal leader of Riley’s new emotions (again, that sounds about right, judging by the memories we’ve so far failed to repress).

Also joining the cast are The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri as Envy, Blue is the Warmest Colour‘s Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui (perfect), Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment, and Paula Pell, Pete Docter, Yvette Nicole Brown, June Squib, John Ratzenberger, and Ron Funches in various roles. Plus, Kyle MacLachlan and Diane Lane are back as Riley’s parents.

Why we’re excited about Inside Out 2

Look, it’s been a quiet few years for Pixar, apart from the surprise slow-burn success of Elemental. Toy Story 4 was their last unqualified commercial and critical success, and that was five years ago. But everyone loves Inside Out, so a return to that well is welcome.

Taking the characters through the onset of adolescence is a stroke of genius, as is the addition of loveable goofball Maya Hawke to the voice cast. If there’s a caveat, it’s that Inside Out is so elegantly constructed and conceived that elaboration will be a disservice, but we’ll roll the dice nonetheless.
