Best new movies and TV series on Disney+ UK: September 2022

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Disney+‘s UK library. Here’s Eliza Janssen’s recommendations for the titles most worth watching. Scroll down for the full list of everything arriving on the platform.

Top picks

Pinocchio

For some whimsical reason, 2022 seems to be the year of the little wooden boy who wished to be real. But which will be the realest, this slick Disney live-action version of their 1940 animated classic? Or Guillermo del Toro’s painstaking stop-motion-style one for Netflix? It’s way too soon to tell, but I do enjoy that the Disney+ retelling, which leads this year’s Disney+ Day proceedings, is breathing life into a faithful reproduction of the original cartoon design. He looks very cute, but I’m still going to jump behind the couch for the inevitable, terrifying Pleasure Island sequence. Hee-haw.

The Old Man: Season 1

You reckon Jeff Bridges is too old to get into John Wick mode and lead his own action-thriller assassin series? Well that’s just like, your opinion, man. Lookin’ suave as hell, Bridges stars opposite John Lithgow as a retired CIA operative whose past catches up to him after he’s been living off the grid for a few decades.

One of my faves Alia Shawkat shows up in the supporting cast, fleshing out a series based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Perry. Fans of Bridges from his Coen collaborations in particular will be happy that T. Bone Burnett is behind the score: he came up with the sound of O Brother Where Art Thou?, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Bridges’ Oscar-winning country tunes in Crazy Heart.

Hocus Pocus 2

The platform’s biggest event Disney+ Day is on September 8, premiering Tom Hanks as Gepetto in Pinocchio (anove) and streaming Thor: Love and Thunder amongst other heavy hitters. But I’m more stoked for September 30, when Disney+ seems to be kicking off Halloween early with some primo spooky titles. That’s when the nearly three-decades-late sequel to Hocus Pocus swoops in with a cackle and a song, featuring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker once more as the wicked Sanderson Sisters. Nothing beats the first movie for very mild, family-friendly scares, and I just pray the second one has an encore performance of Midler’s barnstorming “I Put A Spell On You” cover.
