Best new movies and TV series on Disney+ UK: August 2022

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Disney+‘s UK library. Here’s Eliza Janssen’s recommendations for the titles most worth watching. Scroll down for the full list of everything arriving on the platform.

Top picks

Prey (August 5)

Why the heck is this Predator spin-off, with its cinematic production values and inventive take on the canon, headed straight for Disney’s streaming service? It’s from director Dan Trachtenberg, and has already earned some solid reviews from early screenings, with multiple critics calling it the best Predator film since the testosterone-fuelled OG, which somehow starred two future state governors in Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura.

At least watch the bleak, Comanche Nation showdown in full-screen and ideally on a big TV or projector, as those ashy forest visuals and bow-and-arrow battles look enthralling. Amber Midthunder plays our hero Naru, who must protect her people from an intergalactic threat with heat-seeking vision and a big gnashy maw.

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (August 17)

There’s always been a degree of body horror to the Hulk’s powers—a grotesqueness, and lack of control that makes him one of the most fascinating Marvel heroes to me. But what if he could just kinda own his green/mean appearance and make it work as part of his day job? That’s just what the big guy’s cousin, Jennifer Walters, achieves in her quite sweet and empowering comics appearances as She-Hulk, and now Tatiana Maslany will portray the very verdant lawyer in a new series.

Maslany is the reason I’m tuning in, as she was able to make the drawn-out sci-fi drama of Orphan Black a believable must-see purely through her GOAT multiple performances. Playing both sides of She-Hulk—the commanding, confusing CGI creation and the wise-cracking normie version she appears as in court most of the time—should be a walk in the park for her.

Welcome to Wrexham (August 24)

A real-life Ted Lasso story, with two funny guys you definitely don’t recognise leading the charge. It’s kinda wild Apple TV+ didn’t snap up this docuseries, considering it’s so very similiar in story to their greatest comedy hit, but Disney+ subscribers who are football mad will be pleased that Welcome to Wrexham is calling the platform home.

For the past two years, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been returning the world’s third-oldest professional association football team to its former glory, after COVID and mismanagement left its fortune near the brink of collapse. Sounds like the Americans have a real soft spot for this underdog team, despite having absolutely no idea how football works. Reynolds has spoken on the importance of the social circle around the ailing club: “you really can’t grow a football club without also growing, in tandem, the community.”
